Guide for Picking Out a Golf Club While on the Course

Here at Penn Oaks Golf Club, one of the most common questions we receive from our clients is regarding the clubs that they should use on a particular part of our course. Below, we have a basic guide prepared to help you out when this happens to you.

Practice Beforehand

One of the best ways that you can ensure your game stays on point when it matters is to put in a lot of practice beforehand. This will help you visually confirm how far each club will shoot, how high the ball will elevate, and so on. It will also help you get accustomed to each club.

Consider the Distance

If you are teeing off, then you will always use your driving club. This is because this club is designed to shoot the furthest. The further you need to shoot, the lower of the iron you should use for your remaining shots. As you approach the hole, you will start using a 7 iron, then 8 or 9 iron.

Consider How Much Height You Need

If you are stuck in a bunker, you will need a club like a sand wedge that is designed to shoot the ball further up vertically more than it will horizontally. Each club is designed to provide more or less height than the rest. Read up on your set and know which one will give you the height you need.

Your Level of Comfort with the Club

One of the reasons that you need to practice with your clubs extensively before using them is that you will gain confidence for when it really matters. If you are not confident with a particular golf club, then try to not use that one. Even if you know it is traditionally the best club to use!
